Tolkien was inspired by Iceland

The English writer J.R.R Tolkien based his medieval fantasy; Lord of the Rings on Nordic and Icelandic sagas. It is therefore to no surprise that the story is filled with magical places, people and events. Some say the elves language in the book was influenced by his Icelandic au pair. The story portrays creatures such as hobbits, elves, dwarves and wizards, characters who‘s existence is acknowledged by many Icelanders today.
